When the two were back outside, Mr. Charles said, âI think you did rather well in fooling him. If he saw you dressed the way I did yesterday, he would surely question why you would want a position like that.â
âI was fortunate that my late husband provided well for me, and my investigative fees are more than enough to provide for me as I share a home with my father.â
âGood for youâ¦female detectiveâ¦Cora May told me a little about you. I canât say if Iâve ever met a lady in that position before.
âIf you donât mind my impertinence, things are nasty around Ybor right now. This might be one of the times to leave it to the men. It could prove dangerous for you.â
He seemed genuinely concerned for her like her father would be, and she was not offended by his words and only said, âThank you, Charles. I appreciate it, but as Cora May has you for her protection, I am also surrounded by friends that I may rely on if there is more trouble than I anticipated.
âThank you again for the introduction. I will be on my way to see my friends now.â
âI will see you again for our second secret rendezvous this evening.â
Charles laughed as he said it, and she felt a sense of relief that he reacted as if he did not take her investigation work seriously, perhaps only believing it was only a silly way to keep her from boredom. Otherwise, she believed he would try to discourage Cora May from meeting with her.
Madeline thought he might have feelings for Cora May, even if she didnât care for him in the same way. He was probably a good fifteen years older than her. She had the sense that Cora looked to him as one would an older brother or uncle.
She was close enough to Casa Ybor to walk there, and did so with a watchful eye, trying to memorize the faces of anyone who looked out of place. She thought she might have seen the young man who handed something to the Mayor, but this boy did not have a Panama hat on, but a black cap pulled down over his forehead. He dressed differently, but there was something about the way he carried himself that she thought it might be him.
Deterring from the path to the hotel, she saw him go into The Fat Leaf. She did not follow further though, believing Ricardoâs shop was a hostile environment where she would not be free to speak or even to observe.
